What I’ve learned about leprosy.

During the short time that we’ve had to research and get work done on our projects, I have learned key information about leprosy. A bacterial infection, the disease attacks the body and visibly manifests in skin lesions. These lesions don’t drop appendages as folklore tends to believe, but does deform them by tissue loss. The tissue loss is not a result of the disease itself, but a secondary infection that can result from leprosy. While no one is crystal clear on leprosy’s means of transmission, it is generally accepted that the bacteria spreads through contact with contaminated armadillos and sneezes of the infected. Leprosy had once threatened populations of ancient China, Egypt, and India.
